The contribution green landscapes and sports facilities make to public well-being should not be underestimated. Visit any urban oasis at lunchtime on a sunny day and the value office workers place on green spaces can be recognised immediately. Similarly, popular golf and sports facilities will attract people looking for exercise, relaxation or entertainment. Green environments re-energise bodies. They are also habitats for wildlife. But with current water shortages, can we justify irrigation in the landscape and on sports turf? "Nobody has the right to use vast amounts of water unchecked purely to sustain a landscape," says Simon Edginton, a director at Rain Bird distributor Landscape Watering Systems. "Justification has to go hand in hand with being accountable and efficient. It has to be on the basis that you irrigate in a controlled and planned way. And I am suggesting modest amounts. Then the natural habit and nature benefit too."
