I've been dreaming up a new border. The dream was vivid, as vivid as the previous night's, which had me pleasantly tumbling down an improbably warm and turquoise River Danube, its waters as busy and invigorating as a supercharged Jacuzzi.My gardening dream must have been subconsciously linked to a long string of summer visits to Marchants Hardy Plants in Sussex, where Graham Gough's perennials — in borders and in pots on the nursery — blaze in a Dixteresque rainbow of fabulous hues. While many dreams fade upon waking, this one grew (quite literally) in my mind during the following days as I went about my usual business. It had me turning to Graham's current plant list during tea and coffee breaks and hauling to my bedside table such inspirations as Andrew Lawson's The Gardener's Book of Colour (1996, new revised edition imminent), Tony Lord's Best Borders (1994), and Colour for Adventurous Gardeners (2001) by Mr Dixter himself, the late Christopher Lloyd.
