As autumn unfolds, the horse chestnuts achieve their full glory. That russet foliage and those spiny leathery seed-cases splitting to reveal magical satin-brown conkers comprise an essential seasonal image -- just as the towering candelabras of flowers help define May and the bursting of the fat sticky buds is a conspicuous and greatly loved pointer to spring. All over Europe, from Bucharest to Bushy Park, at least where it's not too arid, this most magnificent and stately of cultivated trees decorates parks, avenues, boulevards and larger gardens. But we Brits in particular have taken it to our hearts. Horse chestnut is as English as country pubs, dotty vicars, village cricket and red buses, and yet hails from far away and has a distinctly romantichistory.
