The last few years have seen the appearance in Italy of several books dealing wholly or in passing with gardeners. These range from the two-volume Atlante del Giardino Italiano1 1750—1940, covering the whole of Italy, to Amor di Pianta, dealing withthe same period but only with gardeners in the Province of Verbano Cusio Ossola (the northern part of Lake Maggiore). They range from Marcellino e Giuseppe Roda, four volumes documenting the life and work of these brothers, in Italy the most celebrated gardeners of the second half of the nineteenth century, to Giardinieri ed esposizioni botaniche in Italia (1800—1915J), which casts its net lower in social terms, by listing less celebrated gardeners and participants in botanical exhibitions.
