Another wet winter when all I can think of is the inevitable leaching of precious nutrients from my woefully thin soil. Thankfully I have made so much compost that I feel sure I can overcome the problem.I have begun to realise that I was not adding enough in the first place. As some of my vegetable crops have become smaller over the years the need for bulky organic matter has become acute. The biodynamic field sprays have helped but they can only work to their true potential in combination with food for the biological life of the soil, which in turn feeds the plants. It is a relief to have cows because they provide a huge quantity of matter. Mixed with all the garden and kitchen waste the result is a mountain that resembles an industrial recycling unit. All I have is a shovel and a barrow to move what looks like at least a couple of tons. This winter it will go on to the garden and be in place before spring comes, for winter is the time when the soilis at its most active beneath the surface. In spring and summer the soil is supporting the growth of plants, in winter it is readying itself to do this. Thus the dark months are the time to add compost so the soil is able to process it. And it should prevent the leaching.
