In late October new flowers were still appearing on a youngish bush of 'Sarah van Fleet', one of those tough rugosa roses that seem to do so well in so many different locations. Our reasonable rainfall and workable clay soil of around pH 6.5 apparently suit a wide range of roses, and although I discarded a number of highly-bred fussy and demanding nineteenth-century French 'grande dames' in the formal part of the garden several years ago I have begun to collect wild and near-wild ones to enliven Cricket Wood with a sprinkling of blooms during summer months and with coloured leaves and waxy red fruits in autumn. Membership of the Historic Roses Group (historicroses.org) helps to keep my juices flowing and if I can find a gap in my own hectic travel schedule I'd like to sign up for one of their overseas jaunts one day and possibly see some of the species sprouting from their native soil.
