It is that time of year again. The rose wine of summer has turned mawkish on the palate, and thicker, redder vintages are being hauled up from the cellar. The mellow fruitfulness has been terrific, and many hundredweight of apples have been wrapped inpaper and laid in cool, airy sheds, ready for weekly survey and excavation in the long cold months. In a fortified manor house down the road squaddies from the local army camp are turning an ancient cider press, stimulated by last year's brew, until they stumble singing hoarsely into the first frosts. So mighty has the apple harvest been, indeed, that the proprietor has decided to exceed his Customs quota by several thousand gallons, burying the surplus in cylindrical drums among the trees so that on warmish days the casual walker is astounded by what appear to be volcanic fumaroles bursting from the sward.
