Vacuum distillation units (VDU) have been the workhorse in the refining industry for recovering distillable products contained in crude oil.The feed to the VDU is the atmospheric tower bottoms (ATB) left behind when the lighter portions of the crude are distilled off in a column operating near atmospheric pressure.
