Magnesium acetate solvates, Mg(OAc) _2·nL, and their hydrates were prepared by crystallization of Mg(OAc) _2·4H _2O or Mg(OAc) _2 from different solvents (L = MeOH, EtOH, HOAc). Anhydrous Mg(OAc) _2 was obtained by thermal dehydration of the tetrahydrate at 150 °C. X-ray single crystal diffraction mostly with the use of synchrotron radiation allowed the structure determination of Mg(OAc) _2(H _2O) _3(EtOH) (I), Mg(OAc) _2(HOAc) _2(H _2O) _2 (II), Mg _3(OAc) _6(MeOH) _6 (III), Mg _3(OAc) _6(HOAc) _2(H _2O) _2·2HOAc (IV), Mg(OAc) _2(HOAc)·1.8(HOAc) (V), Mg(OAc) _2·H _2O (VI), [Mg _3(OAc) _6(EtOH) _2] ·2EtOH (VII), and Mg(OAc) _2 (VIII). Structural data were discussed in terms of the number of neutral O-donor ligands per magnesium atom, coordination environment of magnesium atoms, structural functions of acetate groups, and hydrogen bonding systems.
