摘要

The disease dengue has been known for several hundred years but it was Benjamin Rush's description of a 1780 Philadelphia epidemic that was the earliest description in English of so-called “break-bone fever”. Subsequently, in 1903, it was demonstrated that the disease was transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, and in 1906 it was shown that the causative agent was a virus. In 1944 Albert Sabin identified that two serologically different viruses caused dengue leading to the idea that the disease was caused by multiple serotypes, and in 1956 William Hammon identified two additional serotypes. The idea of four serotypes causing dengue has been maintained over the years but it is clear that the four serotypes are actually four serologically and genetically related, but distinct viruses (DENV-1 to DENV-4).
