Anational UK mastitis survey, conducted in 2011, found the average UK herd has around 61 cases of mastitis per 100 cows each year. Farmers were asked to identify the pathogens involved, and a significant number of cases were due to environmental bacteria, particularly E. coli and Streptococcus. This represents a shift away from the predominant contagious mastitis pathogens which were previously more commonly seen.
