Cultural, socioeconomic, political, and/or religious con-siderations influence individual and collective values.With this in mind we aimed to compile a special issue ofDeveloping World Bioethics addressing medical and bio-ethical values that are influenced by, and impact upon,standards and practices in different cultural or nationalcontexts. Few submissions were received and only threewere accepted by reviewers so producing a special issuewas not possible. Instead we present these three papers asa symposium exploring some of the values and practicesassociated with African, in contrast to Western, bioethicsand medicine.
