In 1974 chemist Daniel K. Hays answered an advertisement. Hays, who grew up in Ambler, Pennsylvania, was responding to an ad from Nicolet Industries, which offered a $20,000 cash reward to anyone who devised a use for its waste chalk piles in Ambler, known to locals as the White Mountains. Specifically, Nicolet offered the money for a "feasible commercial application, actually used by Nicolet Industries, Inc., for 1,500,000 cubic yards of impure calcium carbonate located on 25 acres of its property."
