Science is about the new, history about the old. That's one view anyway. What happens then when science looks at its own history? One mind-set has it that history is full of mistakes and dead ends from which we learned nothing-the 19th century's ether, the 18th century's phlogiston, and the 17th century's alchemical transmutations. In this approach we see only a march of scientific progress in which the present judges the past and finds much of it wanting. This makes for dull history. Chemical Heritage magazine has always taken the view that science doesn't stand apart from the history and culture in which it finds itself. For more than 30 years Chemical Heritage and its previous incarnations have told stories at the intersection of science, culture, and history.
