Doctors will ask patients for their history because they want the full picture, not just a snapshot. So what happens when a whole town becomes the patient? In the case of Ambler, Pennsylvania, the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine joined forces with CHF to create not just a snapshot but a full history of Ambler and the material that made the town: asbestos. Ambler is a small place with two Environmental Protection Agency Superfund sites—one current and one retired—and a much higher-than-average level of mesothelioma, a legacy of more than half a century of asbestos manufacturing. Ambler's fortunes rose and fell with asbestos, reaching a nadir by the early 1990s. The town is now consciously creating a post-asbestos future, while at the same time openly taking stock of its past.
