Father Angelo Secehi was a Jesuit and the director of the Catholic Church's astronomical observatory in Rome from 1850 until his death in 1878. As the director, Secehi conducted groundbreaking astrophysi-cal research using the still new technique of astronomical spectroscopy: for the first time astronomers could determine the chemical constituents of celestial bodies through the light they emitted. Secehi published his research on the sun in Le Soleil (1870), which includes investigations of prominences, sunspots, and the solar chromosphere (one of the layers of the sun's atmosphere).
