One summer in the 1950s, when Bill Jensen was a kid, he planned a bold chemistry experiment. Jensen filled two squirt guns with chemicals taken from his chemistry set; one held a black dye, and the other contained oxalic acid. Guns in hand, he eyed his target, a neighborhood boy. Jensen raised his pistol and fired the black liquid at the boy's white shirt. Stained, the boy became hysterical. "Have no fear," Jensen calmed the boy, sure that the oxalic acid in his other pistol would neutralize the dye. ("With my superior chemical knowledge I would save him from disgrace," a grown-up Jensen recalled.) But when Jensen sprayed the oxalic acid over the stain, it did not disappear; rather, it changed from black to an ugly yellowish-brown, leaving the boy even more upset.
