The laser beam welding is one of the most important technologies for both improving production efficiency and reducing weight of modern metallic aircraft fuselage structures. Beyond its successful implementation in the series production at Airbus Deutschland and Airbus France this technology exhibits enough potential and flexibility for improving its performance in future. Therefore the paper will focus on some new investigations like comparison of Nd:YAG- and CO{sub}2-laser welding technologies for the simultaneous both side welding, development of ribbon-like filler materials for welding in geometrical complicated situations and measures for reducing distortions. Finally a new concept for a 3D-laser welding machine for the simultaneous both side welding of big aircraft structures and its technical realization will be discussed.
