Contemporary designer coatings provide another means for individuals to create unusual decorative effects or to mimic antique looks. With these special materials and techniques, the mood and atmosphere of a room can be set while also reflecting the personal taste of the architect or homeowner. In addition, as technology has advanced, attractive faux finishes have become less expensive and easier to work with, allowing more contractors and do-it-yourselfers to tackle these types of projects. Because most techniques depend largely on the specific approach of the individual applying them, there is great freedom to personalize each project. That ability to create a unique look attracts a lot of people to the idea of faux finishing. As a result, despite-and possibly due in part to-the economic downturn, demand for designer paints and coatings has remained healthy.
