Field evaluation of synthetic and botanical insecticides for managing pyralid pod borer of cowpea

摘要

Cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.], an important pulse crop is susceptible to an array of pest species right from seedling to maturity as well as storage conditions. Among the major pests, spotted pod borer, Maruca vitrata Fab. is the most important pest of cowpea (1,2). It belonges to the family pyralidae of order lepidoptera. It is becoming a predominant pest of cowpea at flowering -podding stage and causes severe losses upto 60 per cent in the tropics and sub-tropics (3). The larva is found toinfest the terminal shoots, flower buds, flowers and pods causing enormous damage by binding the plant parts together with silk and faecal matter (4). It also bores into the pods and feeds on the seeds. Owing to the larval feeding, there is an appreciable loss in seed yield. With a view to manage the pyralid pod borer, certain botanicals as well as synthetic insecticides were evaluated for their efficacy under field conditions ad results are presented herein.
