Three-piece steel aerosol cans stored for long periods of time in a corrosive environment will rust. Eventually, the body or an end will be thinned to the point where the product will escape. If there is an open flame within close proximity, there may be a fire, because many of the products and/or propel-lants are flammable. Warnings on containers filled with flammable contents advise the purchaser to keep the cans away from open flames. The breach in the container may be in the form of a perforation, or, if the can is stored on its bottom on a wet surface for a long time, the wall of the bottom end may be thinned to the extent that the bottom "clamshells," releasing the product suddenly. However, a more likely event is nonuniform thinning and highly localized penetration of the can, causing a slow release of the product.
