I just read the Clinical Updates in the October issue about innovative technology offering virtual visitation for families (Thibeau, Ricouard, & Gilcrease, 2012). What a wonderful project! I think this is very innovative and most valuable for families. I'm retired now, but when I worked in the NICU, I would describe in detail to parents the actions, behaviors, and smiles of their infants. They frequently told me how important this was to them. To have parents be able to see their child any time they want is wonderful. And, for the nurses to recognize the increasing family calls as an opportunity for education is a great result. The collaboration between the nurses and the IT department in setting up webcams is a great demonstration of interdisciplinary research. I hope the authors will seek national funding to expand the project to other centers.
