Those of us with professional development responsibilities in hospitals and approver or provider units have, on more than one occasion, had to respond to the question, "Is this really continuing education or is it in-service education?"The Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development defines continuing education as "systematic professional learning experiences designed to augment the knowledge, skills and attitudes of nurses and therefore enrich the nurses' contributions to quality health care and the pursuit of their professional career goals" (American Nurses Association, 2000, p. 24). A key to this definition is that the learning experiences should build on nurses' basic education or prepare nurses to move to a different area of nursing.
