By the time you read this, we will be only several months away from the presidential election. Yes, I wish it were over, too. If you haven't been paying much attention, maybe you should, because this election is shaping up to have unusually serious and far-reaching implications for the American coal community. Just how serious can be seen in headlines around the country, where organized and well-financed opposition to coal use is making news. Critics are challenging virtually every proposal for new coal-based power plants/Every regulation on mining operations is denounced as too soft and every federal dollar spent on clean coal technologies is challenged as too much. From mountaintop mining to greenhouse gas emissions, coal seems to be a particularly convenient: target for a wide spectrum of people.
