China's biotech growth began in the 1980's with the establishment of the National Center for Biotechnology Development, later to be called the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the initiation of the 863 programme to provide funding to sciences including biotechnology. Between 1997 and 2002 the number of biotech companies in China exploded and there are now well over 500 private biotech companies, over 300 of which are in the medical biotechnology area. China is seen as one of the principal sites for outsourced facilities and activities with many of the biotech companies providing important services to other national and international biotech and pharmaceutical companies and research centres.
