In an otherwise estimable article on the Guinea worm a myth has been perpetuated. The figure labelled Asclepius' rod actually shows the twin-snaked caduceus, the staff of Hermes (Mercury) the messenger of the Olympian gods who also represented merchants, thieves and lawyers. The single snake of the rod of Asclepius is a much better metaphor for treating the worm. The accompanying engraving (Fig. 1) clearly shows one-snaked Asclepius receiving a commercial traveller who is supported by two-snaked Hermes. Presumably the ladies are three of Asclepius' 5 daughters Hygieia ('Hygiene', goddess of health, cleanliness, and sanitation), Iaso (goddess of recuperation from illness), Aceso (goddess of healing), Panacea (goddess of the universal remedy) and the non-medical Aglaea (goddess of beauty and adornment). They seem insufficiently clad to receive visitors, but the engraving is after all by a Frenchman. The Romans say Asclepius discovered how to make Man immortal, but this would have placed mankind with the Gods, so Jupiter killed him with a thunderbolt. At the instigation of Apollo and out of respect for his skill Jupiter placed him in the sky as Ophiuchus, the serpent bearer (Fig. 2). He is the only doctor in the heavens. His snake is the only constellation in two separate parts, Serpens caput and Serpens cauda, two parts but only one snake. In Medieval times, Hermes' caduceus became a symbol of alchemy and occult alternative medicine, and was adopted by Paracelcus. In 1902, the US Army Medical Corps adopted the caduceus as their symbol, adding to the confusion.
