This article reviews the literature on falls prevention in the UK with respect to the confused older patient admitted to hospital. Causes of cognitive impairment are discussed and delirium and dementia specifically identified. The lack of valid and reliable fall risk assessment tools is highlighted. Finally recommendations for preventing falls in hospital are made focusing on staff development and "promoting a safe environment. ? 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
