摘要

Practice development (PD) is a broadly based term that has been defined and conceptualised from several different points of view and includes a wide range of activities aligned to change management and improvement in the healthcare setting. Whilst change has always been a cultural feature within the NHS, recent UK governmental modernization reforms and an emerging theory base for practice development has led to an increasing recognition in the term and its values as actively supporting a continuous process of developing more effective patient centred care. This article attempts to demystify PD and open up the debate for orthopaedic practitioners to reflect on how PD might not only promote quality improvements in orthopaedic healthcare generally, but specifically in one's own orthopaedic practice(s).
