During the past 10 years, researchers have learned a great deal about sarcoidosis. For this issue of Clinics in Dermatology, I have asked experts in various aspects of sarcoidosis to provide a summary of these new insights. Such a compilation of ideas and accomplishments will allow the reader to understand how new information aids the clinician in caring for the patient.A historical perspective of sarcoidosis is provided by Dr Sharma Om, who emphasizes the role cutaneous manifestations have had in our understanding of the disease. Sarcoidosis was originally described as a dermatologic condition. The common involvement of the lung in sarcoidosis was not apparent until the use of chest roentgenogram.
