Illinois Basin coal prices are likely to remain unchanged in the near term due to higher utility stockpiles, while Powder River Basin prices are also likely to stagnate despite increased burn, according to an analyst's research note issued Tuesday. Citing inventory data released earlier this week by Arlington, Virginia-based Energy Ventures Analysis, Brean Capital equities analyst Lucas Pipes said IB stockpiles were up 40% in September compared with the five-year average, totaling 22.6 million st.
