THE purpose of this communication is to express my opinion that there is a great need to improve the consistency of the regulatory guidance values applied to soil contamination in North America. These guid-ance values are used to assess human health risk and to identify remediation obligations, both of which can have important social and financial implications for site owners and the impacted community. Unfortunately, there is very little consistency in the guidance values applied by North American state and province environ-mental regulatory authorities. Furthermore, the magni-tude of disagreement implies fundamental questions about the plausibility, credibility and environmental justice of the methods by which guidance values are de-veloped and applied.
