摘要

This memoir focuses on a two-year period during which a father and his high school dropout son watch movies together and discuss them. As such, it can be read an example of everyday bibliotherapy in action. The story begins with Jesse, the son, in absolute rebellion against high school. He sulks, skips classes, blows off homework, and generally refuses to cooperate with school in any way. David, the dad, sensing that he can't win this stand-off by fighting, responds by telling Jesse he can drop out of school if he wishes. The offer is given with some conditions: basic expenses will be covered by dad so there is no need for Jesse to find a job; there is to be absolutely no drugs; and Jesse must watch three movies a week with his father that they will discuss. The movies are to be selected by David, and Jesse must accept the choices without complaint. Jesse readily agrees and thus the film club is born.
