The bone repair material strongly required porouscalcium phosphate cement with pore diameters of above 100#mu#m for the introduction of osteoblast in vivo. The presentwork dealt with the preparation conditions of porous calciumphosphate cement by adding calcium carbonate (CaCO_3) as afoaming agent to the mixtures of amorphous tricalcium phosphate(ATCP)-hydroxyapatite (HAp) –citric acid-chitosan. The porouscement was prepared under the following conditions: theliquid/solid weight ratio, 1.0~1.6; HAp wisker/ ATCP weight ratio,0.4; CaCO_3/ATCP molar ratio, 0.34; citric acid solution, 2.0mol dm~-3; and the amount of chitosan, 4.0 masspercent. Theproducts were characterized by X-ray diffractometry, thermalanalysis (TG-DTA), the measurement of pore size distribution andscanning electron microscopy (SEM). The compressive andbending strengths were improved with increasing amount ofchitosan in cement. In addition, the large pores were created byadding CaCO_3. The optimum conditions for the preparation ofporous cement having pore diameters of above 100 #mu#m wereas follows: the liquid/solid weight ratio, 1.5; the amount of chitsan,4.0 masspercent; and CaCO_3/ATCP molar ratio, 0.09. The mainproducts after hydration were octacalcium phosphate (OCP) anddicalcium phosphate di-hydrate (DCPD). The addition of CaCO_3promoted the formation of large pores and crystallization from ATCP.
