摘要

The world's forests seem to be balanced precariously between the possibility of a sustainable future or a future of degradation and destruction (Jenkins and Smith, 1999). Better forest management is needed now, and certification programmes for forestsand forest products offer a possibility for improved management. Certification programmes are seen as a means to assess and evaluate sustainable forestry, which may be defined as forest management that is ecologically sound, economically viable, and socially desirable, programmes certifying that landowners practice sustainable forest management, or that wood-based products come from sustainably managed forests, are in the early stages of development. Such programmes offer some promise and present somepitfalls for forest landowners, forest products manufacturers, and consumers. Because the public insists that forests be managed sustainably, certification of forest land management and wood products can be expected to continue to grow, and programmes will continue to evolve.
