The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, a division of the federal government, regulates safety in the workplace through the enforcement of the Hazard Communication Standard. Employees and employers have responsibilities to one another to maintain a safe workplace. The employer has a responsibility to communicate the known hazards in the workplace, establish policies designed to protect workers, and provide safety equipment to protect the employees. The employees have the responsibility oflearning about the known hazards in the workplace, implementing any safety policies, and wearing the required personal protective equipment. The employer must maintain a file of product material safety data sheets (MSDS) for employees, and employees mustbe familiar with the file. The employee must know how to read and use the information on the MSDS for any product that is used. The employee must be familiar with the equipment used, the proper use of that equipment, and its maintenance schedule to keep it in good working order. Manuals for each piece of equipment should be available. The purpose of this Foundations feature is to review some techniques to prevent injury in the dental operatory, emphasizing the prevention of repetitive strain injuries.
