Response of bentgrass cultivars to preemergence herbicides.

A field experiment was conducted during 1994-95 to evaluate the tolerance of five creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) cultivars to preemergence herbicides. There was no herbicide-by-cultivar interaction. All herbicides applied at recommended rates resulted in acceptable turf quality (?2% of untreated) throughout the spring and summer. Dithiopyr at 0.43 kg/ha reduced quality by 5% within two weeks after treatment, while oxadiazon at 3.4 kg/ha and bensulide + oxadiazon at 6.7 + 1.7 kg/ha reduced quality by 8%. There was no difference in quality and density of creeping bentgrass when treated with bensulide + oxadiazon at 1X (6.7 + 1.7 kg/ha) and 3X (20.2 + 5.0 kg/ha) rates. Quality was similar when dithiopyr was applied at 1X (0.43 kg/ha) and3X (1.28 kg/ha) rates, but density was lower during May and June at the higher rate. The quality and density of creeping bentgrass was lower for most of the spring and summer when treated with oxadiazon at the 3X rate (10.1 kg/ha) compared with the 1X rate (3.4 kg/ha). Cv. Cato and Crenshaw generally maintained a higher turf quality than cv. Pennlinks and Syn-1 throughout the spring and summer, and higher than cv. Penncross in August.
