Effects of plant growth regulators on tall fescue rooting and water use.

The effects of the plant growth regulators mefluidide, paclobutrazol, trinexapac-ethyl (4-(cyclopropyl-alpha-hydroxymethylene)-3,5-dioxo-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid methylester) and ethephon on rooting characteristics, root water extraction from soilwith increasing depth, and evapotranspiration rate in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea cv. Kentucky 31) were investigated for plants growing in a greenhouse. Ethephon had the most detrimental effect on maximum rooting depth (MRD), root length density (RLD) with increasing profile depth, total root length (TRL: the sum of root length densities at all depths) and root water extraction from soil. Paclobutrazol decreased MRD, TRL and RLD at 2 rooting depths. Trinexapac-ethyl had no effect on MRD, but decreased TRL and RLD at 10-20 cm depth in 1 of 2 experiments. Mefluidide had no effect on MRD or TRL, but decreased RLD at 10-20 cm depth in 1 of 2 experiments. Mefluidide, ethephon and trinexapac-ethyl reduced evapotranspiration rate over a 6 week period; paclobutrazol had no effect. Although ethephon reduced evapotranspiration, it also resulted in the shortest maximum rooting depths and lowest root length densities of all the plant growth regulators tested, increasing vulnerability to water stress. All plant growth regulators reduced shoot elongation rate and clipping weight.
