摘要

The traditional model of healthcare was developed on the premise that the majority of the population were uneducated, in general, and in matters of health, in particular. People were dependent on the educated expert to identify their health needs and prescribe an appropriate intervention. The appropriateness of the intervention was rarely questioned as the prescriber was revered as the technical expert. There are at least two factors that have coalesced to fundamentally challenge this model.Firstly, 'the education of the masses' has served to undermine this paternalistic model of healthcare. Education leads people to question a previously 'given' authority. It also empowers people to think more about the impact of their own behaviours and those of others on their health and well-being. More recently the advent of the internet with the concomitant ease of access to information has exposed more and more people to information about their own health needs and how they might be addressed.
