Bioagronomic evaluation of a micropropagated clone of Campanula medium.

Explants of Campanula medium were grown on MS-based medium and used in a mass multiplication program. A field trial with clonal material acclimatized to in vivo conditions was carried out from September to June. The plants were subjected to different temperature treatments before transplanting (0 or 6 weeks at 5 degrees C) or to different photoperiods after transplanting (ND or LD conditions). For LD conditions, a day lengthening treatment was supplied by incandescent lamps with a light intensity of 60-100 lux. The plants flowered in May, irrespective of the temperature or photoperiod treatment. The best results were achieved for plants without low temperature treatment maintained in ND conditions. Eight flowers/plant, out of a total yield of 12.2 flowers/plant (nearly 70 stems/m2 of cultivated soil), showed a higher quality corresponding to a stem height >60 cm and more than 15 bells on the inflorescence. High homogeneity of the morphological characters of the flowers, resembling the superior characters of the original plant, was observed. Micropropagation was successfully carried out and rooting of the microcuttings was performed in perlite with gradual adaptation to "in vivo" conditions..
