The chrome-free lining of cement rotary kilns is one of the most important subjects of Japanese refractory industry from the viewpoint of global environmental protection. Shinagawa has developed a series of chrome-free bricks called ECOLOK and an integrated series of magnesiaspinel bricks called SPILOK that have been used successfully in domestic cement rotary kilns. ECOLOK has excellent erosion resistance and coating stability for the high temperature burning zone, while SPILOK is characterized by its good spalling resistance and structural flexibility making it suitable for the transition and tire zones of the kiln. In this paper the features and recent performances of ECOLOK and SPILOK will be presented.
