Fungal allergy: definitions and treatment There is an increasing interest in the role of fungi in causing tissue damage and inflammation in both the upper and lower airways. Fungi can cause problems in allergic disease by acting as seasonal aeroallergens and by causing low-grade infection of the bronchial tree. Fungi such as Alternaria alt-ernata and Cladosporium herbarum cause the former, whereas thermotolerant fungi, many belonging to the Aspergiilus and Penicillium genera, which can grow at body temperature can cause both problems [1, 2].
