We have modeled a ring-based WDM transport network where a ring is operated with the standby wavelengths shared and optical signals switched by a wavelength-path. It is proved that subnetwork connection protection using sublayer trail monitoring is suitable for the network due to its expandability. The usefulness is proved by showing its protection model. An overall OTN network including OTN clients is modeled, and it is shown that the model could be an SDH/ OTN hybrid model or all OTN model. A three-node experimental ring network using the SDH/OTN hybrid model confirmed the practicality.
