Fighting for chloride: A novel catalyst system for ethene trimerization consisting of chromium acetylacetonate, the ligand Ph_2PN(iPr)P(Ph) N(iPr)H, triethylaluminium, and ionic modifiers has been investigated. Chloride has been identified as an important component of this catalytic system: An optimized [Cr]/[Cl]/[Al] ratio enhances the catalytic activity while the selectivity of the reaction remains unaffected (see scheme; acac= acetylacetonate).
