The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanism of seedless induction by streptomycin in 'Kyoho' grapes. Inflorescences were dipped with 125 ppm streptomycin six days before flower bloom. Pollen grains of treated inflorescences were smaller and had lower germination percentage than those of untreated inflorescences. Pollen tube growth was inhibited and exhibited wavy tube structure and swelling of the tube tips in Brewbaker and Kwack (B&K) medium containing streptomycin. Pollen tube growth inside styles also exhibited the same characteristics. Ovules showed abnormalities after full bloom in the treated inflorescences but less expressive in mutual pollination flowers (i.e., emasculation and cross pollination between treated and untreatedflowers) indicating an inhibitory effect of this antibiotic on ovule development. Pollen germination and pollen tube growth of four stenospermocarpic seedless cultivars were also examined. The pollen tubes showed the similar characteristics as observedin the streptomycin treated 'Kyoho' grapes. The results suggested that wavy walls, swollen tips and callose plug deposition were common in seedless cultivars and streptomycin treated 'Kyoho' grapes. However, ovule development was also affected by streptomycin application because seedless percentage was reduced by mutual pollination.
