Marine elasmobranches present an intriguing model for understanding the mechanisms of fish epithelial acid-base transfers, because salt excretion is predominantly accomplished by an extrarenal salt gland (the rectal gland), whereas acid-base exchanges occur nearly completely across the branchial tissues (41, 54). Several species (20, 34) have been shown to adjust rapidly to either metabolic or respiratory acidosis by utilizing gill-to-water H~+ transfers.
