Ethanol derived from corn requires a significant amount of water to produce, but a new study highlights the considerable regional variation in water needs across the US due to differences in climate and irrigation practices. Researchers, whose findings are in the latest issue of Environmental Science and Technology, published by the American Chemical Society, determined that the water footprint for corn-derived ethanol varies dramatically - from 5 to 2,138 liters (1 to 565 gallons) of water needed per liter of ethanol produced. Previous studies estimated that each liter of ethanol uses 263-784 liters of water.
