BP is gearing up to file papers in a US court alleging negligence on the part of Macondo well drilling contractor Transocean, according to the legal game plan unveiled by the UK oil major at an analysts-only seminar on Monday. According to a source who attended the event — on which BP has released no com- ment — the papers will be filed on Dec. 7. In them, BP will assert that Transocean, the owner and operator of the Deepwater Hori- zon rig that exploded in the US Gulf of Mexi- co in April 2010, leading to the loss of 11 lives and ultimately the largest marine oil spill in US history, was negligent in terms of well control. It also intends to show both that Transocean was in violation of its con- tract with BP, and that the Deepwater Horizon itself was "unseaworthy."
