Royal Dutch Shell said it has cleared another important hurdle that it hopes will lead to the drilling of exploration wells on its leases in federal waters offshore north Alaska this summer — plans that have faced years of delays. In September, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued permits for part of the fleet of vessels that Shell proposes to use for exploration drilling in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas from July to October — the brief period when drilling is feasible in the Arctic (IOD Sep.21’11).
