Shell has committed to spending almost C$1 billion over six years to explore for oil and gas in four deepwater blocks offshore Nova Scotia on Canada’s East Coast — a move that represents a big vote of confidence in a region that never really lived up to earlier hopes that it could yield big discoveries. The amount — C$970 million (US$957 million) — is the most ever spent by a company to secure drilling rights off Canada’s East Coast. Shell will be exploring an area called the Scotian Margin about 200 kilometers (125 miles) off the coast of southwestern Nova Scotia.
