摘要

Drilling has begun of the Sabisa-1 well in the South Omo Block in Ethiopia, testing whether recent oil discoveries to the south in Kenya extend into this northern section of the East African rift basin. The much-hyped well is seen as a play-opener, with results expected in the second quarter. Canada-based Africa Oil Corp. announced Monday that Sabisa-1 was spudded on Jan. 13 and would take approximately 60 days to reach a target total depth of 2,600 meters. The operator is UK-listed Tullow Oil, which on Monday saw its 2012 earnings estimate cut 25% by Citibank after lower-than-expected production and higher noncash write-offs driven by write-downs in Guyana, Suriname and Ghana (IOD Jan.14'13).
